The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a national awarding organisation (NAO) of the European Association of Psychotherapy (EAP). As such it also operates procedures to recognise European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP) qualifications awarded by other EAP NAOs. These procedures operate to direct applicants to the appropriate college within UKCP based on their original EAP recognised training and qualification.
Potential applicants who hold a valid ECP and can demonstrate up to date membership of a European Accredited Psychotherapy Training Institute should in the first instance, contact UKCP’s membership team with details of their ECP qualification. UKCP will check the details of the applicant’s qualification and their EAP membership status and will then advise the applicant which UKCP College it is most appropriate for them to be registered with (i.e. the College appropriate to the modality in which the applicant has trained). The applicant will also be provided with details of UKCP Organisational Members (such as FiP) able to list ECP applicants.
The benefits of membership of a UKCP Organisational member such as FiP are the availability of support and guidance, especially in relation to ethical questions. FiP also provides access to continuing professional development and the opportunity to feel part of a community of peers.
Once UKCP/CPJA registration has been confirmed applicants should complete FiP’s online application process for Full Clinical Membership or Full non-Clinical Membership whichever membership status is sought. On receipt of an ECP based application FiP will contact UKCP for confirmation of the applicant’s qualification status prior to processing other aspects of the membership application.
